donna de lory

Donna De Lory is a singer and songwriter whose voice and lyrics seem to transcend time and genre. Her most recent CD, The Lover & The Beloved, blends Sanskrit chants and modern melodies, with some English lyrics peppered throughout. De Lory always knew she would be a singer, and received confirmation early on when she was asked to sing in a Recipe dog food commercial at the age of eight.

Raised in a musical home, her grandfather played cello and upright bass in the Warner Bros. Studios orchestra for films that included Casablanca and Gone With The Wind. Her mother was a singer and dancer. Her father, keyboardist and producer Al De Lory made records with Phil Spector's Wrecking Crew and even played on the Beach Boys' landmark Pet Sounds album.

By the time De Lory hit junior high, she had been immortalized as the voice on the theme song for Disneyland’s "It's A Small World" ride. At 15, De Lory and her father moved to Nashville where she says "I began hanging out with artists and songwriters. I picked up a guitar, starting writing a little bit and decided that this is what I really wanted to do." De Lory returned to Los Angeles to study singing, dancing and acting. She sang vocals on albums by Carly Simon, Ray Parker Jr., Kim Carnes and Santana, and landed her breakthrough gig accompanying Madonna.

In 1993, she released a self-titled debut album on MCA Records that produced a number one single in Japan and a top 10 dance hit in the U.S. She later had another top 10 Billboard Dance hit with her 2004 collaboration with producer/re-mixer Mac Quayle, a club version of the Tears For Fears song, "The Hurting," honoring victims of 9-11.

After parting ways with MCA in the mid-90s, De Lory really began to hone her own sound. She and cellist Cameron Stone converted her garage into the studio where she recorded her CDs, Bliss, In the Glow and The Lover & The Beloved.

Her pop experience and emerging interest in world sounds combined with his classical training to form a beautiful musical hybrid. De Lory was surprised to find fans of her new sound in unusual places, including yoga centers. "It felt really free," she said. "When you play in a space like that, the people are so into the music. They want to be taken away. They're closing their eyes. They’re letting go and really listening."

These performances, coupled with De Lory's burgeoning yoga practice, led her in the direction of devotional music. Soon she found herself adding Sanskrit chants to her songs and performance repertoire. This led to her latest venture, a Sanskrit chant CD for the record label, Ajna Music, an emerging leader in the metro-spiritual music genre. And while a collection of ancient Indian mantras set to modern beats may seem like a departure, for De Lory, this seamless blend of east and west, devotion and pop, is just the next bold step in her continuing musical evolution. "In English, I write about relationships, but when I sing in Sanskrit it’s more about spirit and what is beyond words," she explained. "It’s great to not have to follow a certain form, like you do in pop. There are no rules for this type of music." "Playing music helps me get away from my personality and my mind and allows me to just be," said De Lory. "I realize that being able to do this is a gift. If I can inspire people or help with their healing, if I can help them appreciate the people they love more or get in touch with their own bliss, then I’ve done what I’m here to do."
