deva premal & miten

deva premal & miten “I wake every morning feeling like I’m living in a miracle – where spirituality, creativity, work, and love have all come to mean the same thing.  My life has been shaped by mantras; I have become their servant.” - Deva Premal

After touring non-stop for almost 15 years and with over 300,000 CDs sold worldwide, Deva Premal & Miten are living proof that mantras are as relevant today as they were thousands of years ago.  Singing mantras has been a passion for Deva Premal since growing up in a German home permeated with Eastern spirituality.

Now Deva Premal and her partner Miten travel the world sharing their gift of mantra music with enraptured audiences.  "Our music has always felt precious," says Deva Premal.  "Now our job is to travel and share it.  Over time more and more people are coming to the celebration."

Deva Premal and Miten’s music is an invitation into the nature of love, devotion, and consciousness.  The couple have been living and playing together since 1991, releasing a string of acclaimed CDs along the way.  Their concerts have touched the hearts of seekers throughout the world.

“Our music is born out of meditation and a celebration of life.  It’s not a matter of entertaining people.  We play to nourish a longing in the heart for that which never dies – the experience of love and meditation.”
 - Miten

Deva Premal, best known for her top-selling chant CDs, is a classically trained musician and gifted singer.  Her albums, The Essence, Love Is Space, and Embrace have topped New Age charts and popularity polls in record shops, yoga studios and healing centers all over Europe, Australia and America.

Miten, originally from England, began as a singer-songwriter-guitarist in the 70s, opening for such groups as Fleetwood Mac and Ry Cooder.  He then discovered the power of meditation and left the world of rock ‘n’ roll behind.  Miten’s focus on a more spiritual path is reflected in his meditative, joyful and often sensual songs featured on CDs including Songs For The Inner Lover, Strength Of A Rose,
and Trusting The Silence.

Deva Premal & Miten originally met at an ashram in India.  One morning, Miten was sitting on the edge of his bed playing guitar when Deva Premal spontaneously began singing harmony with him.  Everyone was astounded by the sound of her voice, including Miten.  “Her voice is such a pure expression,” says Miten, “there’s no ego in it.  That may be what touches people…”

Deva Premal and Miten’s offering to the world is supported by a simple yet elegant vision:  "Everybody with a voice can sing, and everyone with a breath in their body can experience their divinity.  Our nourishment and life’s work is to create spaces around the planet where the silence that follows the chant is clearly tangible.  We share with others the healing power of the voice… and the bliss that it brings.”

The world is a better place thanks to Deva Premal and Miten’s gift of music.

manose

manose Manose's hometown, Boudha, Nepal stands on the ancient trade route leading from the Himalayan mountains down into the Kathmandu valley.  It is just upriver from Nepal's most holy Hindu temple, and is home to an important Buddhist shrine.

Here eight-year-old Manose fell in love with the bamboo flute one night when a breeze wafted its song through his window.  Truly, the sound of the bansuri is seductive.  It has a resonate quality that mimics the human voice.  And because it is not valved like a silver flute, its potential for subtle expressiveness is practically limitless.

He purchased a two-rupee flute from a street hawker and began to carry it with him in his school bag where it vied for space with his favorite sling shot.  His real relationship with music began when Manose heard about an old man who played haunting music on the shenai.  That man, Madan Dev Bhatta, a disciple of Ustad Bishmilallah Khan, initiated Manose into the study of classical raga music, often known as North Indian classical music.

At the same time, Manose began to collect cassettes by flute maestro Hariprasad Chaurasia.  To augment the lessons he was getting from Bhatta, Manose would play the cassettes again and again, trying to copy what he heard, often practicing five or six hours a day.  "I wanted to learn," says Manose.  "I wanted to have something."

Now, as a performer in a variety of genres from raga, to Nepali folk, to fusion rock, his sound has matured into something at once ethereal, powerful, and playful.   Now, as a performer in a variety of genres from raga, to Nepali folk, to fusion rock, his sound has matured into something at once ethereal, powerful, and playful.

He is widely recognized as Nepal's premiere flautist and is the recipient of national awards including instrumentalist of the year.  And even while living in the United States, he still manages to be a vital part of the music scene back home.  His music videos air regularly on Nepali TV, he is a member of one of the county's most popular rock bands, 1974AD, and he is a regular participant in Nepal’s fledgling jazz festival, Jazzmandu.

In the United States, Manose performs and records with Grammy-nominated fusion artist Jai Uttal, The Chicago Children’s Choir, singers Krishna Das and Deva Premal, tabla maestro Swapan Chowdary, and blue grass great Peter Rowan.  He is also a member of the New Maihar Band, an ensemble created by living legend Ali Akbar Khan.  He has performed in Canada, France,England, Switzerland, Germany, Hong Kong, and Malaysia.
