Aurora CD by Christopher of the Wolves offers the sounds of the hang - a new kind of steel drum, for yoga and dance, new age music, instrumental and relaxation music.
Aurora was recorded in 3 days in September and October of 2006 in a vast underground cistern, located in Port Townsend, Washington. The cistern is about 150 feet in diameter, 14 feet high and round. It’s the most incredible sound chamber I’ve ever experienced.
Aurora is focused on the sounds of the hang, a new kind of steel drum made in Bern, Switzerland.
The hang is a percussive steel musical instrument, which uses the same physical principles as the steel drum. The hang is generally played with the hands and fingers, so the sound is generally softer and 'warmer' than a traditional steelpan. Depending on how it is played the notes can sound like a harp, bells, or harmonically tuned steelpans. Each 'Tone Field' has several overtones built into and around each fundamental note.
