Ingerman and Wesselman, weaving together the work of a counsel of other shamanic teachers, make ancient shamanic practices both accessible and applicable to our daily lives. Shamanic practices can bring about positive changes in one’s life—similar to the benefits of yoga or meditation. Directed toward those either with or without a large background in shamanism, this book begins with an introduction to ancient and modern shamanism, then provides a contemporary take on various shamanic practices including connecting to nature, connecting to a spirit animal, working with dreams, working with death, working with the power of the weather and more. Readers are given exercises to help apply the teachings to their lives. The book ends with a discussion about building a shamanic community, and integrating oneself into what Wesselman and Ingerman call the 'transformational community.'
Sandra Ingerman, MA, teaches workshops internationally on shamanic journeying, healing, and reversing environmental pollution using spiritual methods. She has trained and founded an international alliance of Medicine for the Earth Teachers and shamanic teachers. Sandra is recognized for bridging ancient cross-cultural healing methods into our modern culture and addressing the needs of our times. She is a licensed Marriage and Family therapist and Professional Mental Health Counselor. She is also a board-certified expert on traumatic stress as well as certified in acute traumatic stress management.
Research paleoanthropologist Hank Wesselman is one of those rare cutting-edge scientists who truly walks between the worlds. He did his undergraduate work, as well as his Masters Degree, in Zoology at the University of Colorado at Boulder, then went on to receive his doctoral degree in Anthropology from the University of California at Berkeley. A native New Yorker, he has spent much of his life working among traditional tribal peoples, primarily in Africa and Polynesia. He served in the US Peace Corps in the 60's, living among people of the Yoruba Tribe in Nigeria for two years. For the past 30 years, he has conducted research with an international group of scientists, exploring eastern Africa's Great Rift Valley in search of answers to the mystery of human origins. During this time, he has worked alongside such worthies as Dr. Don Johanson, Lucy's discoverer; Professor Tim White, whose expeditions have been featured in several TIME magazine cover stories (the most recent: 7-23-2001), as well as members of the famous Leakey family. He is also a shaman in training, now in the 20th year of his apprenticeship.
