InnerVersions: A Six Degrees Yoga Compilation Compiled & Mixed by EarthRise SoundSystem's Derek Beres offers upbeat yoga music for yoga dance.
InnerVersions is a seamless collection of popular tracks, compiled & mixed by noted Yoga instructor, DJ and EarthRise SoundSystem founder, Derek Beres. As Beres so eloquently states in his liner notes: "America's yoga tribe is an open-minded community embodying the time-tested intention of the practice: union. Since 1993, yoga and music have been two aspects of the one path I've traveled. Since I began teaching in 2004, I've sought music with plenty of soul and tons of bass, to move students from the inside out. I'm honored and delighted that the label has opened its incredible catalog for me to craft this beat-driven and melodic mix, perfect for the modern yoga studio."
Designed to be a hip and functional soundtrack to anyone's yoga practice and put together by an instructor who knows about optimum flow for a session, InnerVersions explodes any stereotypes one might have of boring, "new age", Yoga tunes and works equally well, whether you're listening or getting your yoga on.
InnerVersions opens with a nine-minute remix of Azam Ali's masterful "Abode" by Bombay Dub Orchestra, the beats slowly unfold with the gorgeous midtempo "Khayaal" by Delhi duo Midival Punditz, featuring Vishal Vaid on vocals. Lal Meri, an inventive trio led by sultry singer Nancy Kaye and producer Carmen Rizzo, keeps the flow going, connecting Los Angeles beat culture with Brazil's bossa breakthrough, Céu. Beres mixes in two new tracks: Canadian producer Eccodek offers "Silent Song," a beautiful collaboration with Indian singer Kiran Ahluwalia, followed by Beres's own "Makyen Ghrir Allah," produced with EarthRise SoundSystem co-founder Duke Mushroom.
Tabla player extraordinaire Karsh Kale moves the mix from EarthRise to "Break of Dawn," followed by the incredible remix efforts of Gaudi as he reworks old Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan ghazals. San Franciscan producer and master percussionist Jef Stott begins to wind things down, while downtempo masters Bombay Dub Orchestra reappear with an original song, "Strange Constellations," blending into Cheb I Sabbah's "Lagi Lagan," from his modern collection of bhajans, Krishna Lila. InnerVersions closes with a classic Bob Holroyd track, "Adrift in Kerela."
The yoga community has embraced Beres's global-minded playlists for the seven years he's been teaching, predominantly at Manhattan's Equinox Fitness and Pure Yoga. He has also written for and been featured in Yoga Journal, and has contributed to National Geographic online. His music project, EarthRise SoundSystem, reached number five on the iTunes World Charts with its debut album, The Yoga Sessions.
