| Perfect Alignment |
Steven Halpern and Oregon reedman Paul McCandless resonate some classic vibes on Perfect Alignment. I almost had flashbacks hearing Halpern’s vintage chords, octaves, progressions and familiar Rhodes electric piano harkening to those free floating new age cornerstones Eastern Peace and Spectrum Suite.
However moving along a quarter century-plus, Halpern’s musical direction has grooved up. Marc Van Wageningen’s fretless bass lays down sensual and seductively spongy bass lines, while smart percussion by George Marsh and Kim Atkinson stir up centering heartbeats or hypnotic Middle Eastern spells. The title track starts the album in a pastorale mood with Halpern’s grand piano cradling McCandless’s heartfelt melody.
On Deep Peace, Halpern paints a backdrop of celestial tones for McCandless’s inventive interplay with the bass. Halpern’s piano on Midnight Memories offers a somber bluesy feeling, while Body Language is all bebop, sass, and bongo hip. The bass slides front on the sensual Glide, like hitching a ride on a comet.
Perfect Alignment exudes a performance rapport beyond the concept for any one piece, and every time I put it on, I discover something new, yet somehow eternal. The album is spacious enough to slip easily in the background, but I found the music often tapped me on the shoulder to take note of something “kewl.”

So relaxing, I've never heard the last few songs!, December 27, 2003
Reviewer:
I say the above because I use this CD to fall asleep to...and I have yet to hear the last few songs, because I'm always fast asleep before the CD is over! There is nothing more relaxing than the sound of soft ocean waves and the tinkling of piano keys. Steve Halpern has done an excellent job with this CD. It is so relaxing that I've ordered it for my cousin, who has brain cancer and has trouble sleeping because of treatment. I am sure this CD will help calm her, and you.

When I first saw this CD in the store, I thought it sounded silly. Then i came across it on amazon and actually listened to the first few tracks. I was hooked. These tracks are so relaxing, more so than any other relaxation CD I have tried. I fall asleep to it every night. I highly recommend this album to those seeking a little bit of peace, because I find it while hearing these crystal bowls.

This is a wonderful cd to keep you calm at work and help restore your peace of mind. In The Flow and Waterfall are particularly charming tracks. The CD also contains three hidden tracks, the last of which is exclusively listening to the soothing sounds of the surf. It's truly a calming experience and particularly comforting to highly-stressed and supersensitive people.
